A review of “The Last Victim (A Violet Darger Story) by Tim McBain and LT Vargus

The Last VictimFull disclosure – I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the authors but have voluntarily provided a review. All opinions are my own.

A trip into the past

The Last Victim is a short transitional piece in the Violet Darger series of books by Tim McBain and LT Vargus

I really love the little shorts in between the bigger novels in not only the Violet Darger novels but also The Scattered in the Dead Series. This is a brilliant way to advance the story by setting up the next book or providing back story in such a way that the overall story isn’t muddled by its inclusion in the larger books in the series.

In The Last Victim, Agent Loshak, under the guise of attending a criminology conference heads out to Las Vegas without his partner. The deception is needed because if Violet knew his real reason for going out west she would want to tag along. Loshak is going to visit the only surviving victim of serial killer Leonard Stump. If Loshak’s hunch is correct, this murderer may be poised to make another appearance more than twenty years after his last known victim.

Told mostly from the victim’s perspective and her interactions with the killer as her and her best friend find themselves in his clutches this little gem is perfect to segue into the next installment or to introduce you to the Violet Darger series. After reading The Last Victim, I am eager to see how Stump factors into the upcoming book(s) in this brilliant series.
