Necro antics in the land of the Elven
Freshly back from his quest to rescue his mentor Charles, Kifo finds himself saddled with an unlikely houseguest in Shi who has turned out to be his long-lost father. The adjustment has not been easy, but the pair are slowly getting to know each other. With their next quest looming, Charles, Kifo and Shi must assist Tali with acclimating to staying in her human form so she can accompany them to the Elven home world. A land very few humans have ever set foot in and a land so beautifully hostile any interloper will go mad without the aid of an elven companion or a dragon. The goal is so Shi can bathe in the fabled waters of Lake Elinor and be cured of the werewolf curse. But of course, true to necro life nothing is easy and what initially starts out as a quick “splash and dash” turns into a rescue mission when Kifo and Tali find themselves stranded with no way home. As they wait for Charles and Kifo to reopen to the portal to rescue them they end up on a crazy adventure in hostile land. Attempting to evade their pursuers, the pair end up seeing more of the elven world than any necro before and most likely any necro after. But the way home is not guaranteed, and it is only with the help of an influential ally that the two are able to return however it is not without a price.
Elven Chaos is the second in the Bathed in Dragon’s Blood series by author Al K. Line. Picking up days after the end of Human Folly, Kifo’s life has practically changed overnight upon the discovery of not only his father but his grandfather. It’s a lot to take in for one once thought an orphan but he seems to have taken it in stride as he prepares to accompany his father and grandfather to the elven home world. The trip will not be easy even for those with elven blood and this is where Tali comes in. As part of her practice to stay in human form and act as a normal woman, the boys take her on what would typically be considered an everyday mundane outing but for a dragon in disguise this turns into quite an entertaining part of the book. Tali has really begun to grow on me with this installment. She is a dragon, but also has human qualities and feelings as evidenced in her attraction to Kifo and him to her. While this is most likely due to their blood bond, it will be interesting to see if their trip to Lake Elinor has any additional influence on this developing relationship.
This series is shaping up to be a nice fast paced action-packed trip into the Necroverse that provides a bit of a break in the action from the long running Notes of Necrosoph but not departing completely from the world which offers a familiar setting and as well as several overlapping characters. If you are new to this series and like what you have read so far, the Notes of Necrosoph series will take you more in depth into the yearly notes and the extremely controlled and monitored world of the necros. Next up – Kifo and the crew have accepted a challenge to go into another realm that has been all but closed off to humans in Dwarven Madness which is scheduled for a July 2023 release.
