Full Disclosure – I was provided a copy of the book by the author as a member of his “A-Team”, however, have voluntarily chosen to write a review. All opinions are my own.
Human Folly is scheduled for a June 5, 2023 release
Blood bonds
Kifo is not a typical necro. When he was found by Charles at a very young age he was dead. But after having been revived by the blood of a dragon he is now an assassin for his old and slightly mysterious friend and mentor. As probably one of the only necros immune to the dreaded yearly notes, Kifo moves under the radar and he likes it that way. Aside from the occasional assassination mission assigned by Charles, he lives a quiet life with his companions that include a house gnome, painted dog and the dragon that saved his life all those years ago. When his compound is breached by unwelcome elven visitors, Kifo is shocked to learn that they are attempting to locate Charles. But what could the elves want with his friend? The questions only increase when Charles goes missing and Kifo’s once thought impenetrable home has another uninvited visitor. Joined by Shi a reclusive shifter, Kifo, Tali and Nava set out to locate and rescue Charles and defeat the elves. But the process is not easy and he learns secrets about his mentor along the way than he has ever that could forever change their relationship.
Human Folly is the first in the new Bathed in Dragon’s Blood series by author Al K. Line. While set in the same world as the Notes of Necrosoph series, the story line runs concurrently with the main series, but is a separate cast of characters. There are some overlapping characters, but nothing that would cause readers of this series to miss any main point with the characters’ appearances in the other. In fact, Soph and Tyr’s adventures with Eleron in the elven world during Kill Switch are briefly alluded to, but this is done more from a lore standpoint than to have an impact on this new story line. The narrative moves at a very fast pace and Line covers a lot of ground in this first book, including answering several questions the reader may have had especially if you are also concurrently reading the Notes of Necrosoph. The chemistry that Kifo has with Tali, his bonded dragon, is interesting at best and almost cringe at worst but I am still looking forward to how this dynamic plays out. There are many, many possibilities and to say any more about this book in general would be a spoiler. Needless to say, I am eagerly looking forward to Elven Chaos, which is due to be released later this month.
